9 Months: Not the best end to summer...

Hey y'all...

My household is sick.  No bueno.  Well, except for Miles and me; somehow we've evaded the yuckies, but Leif has been in and out, and hubs has been out for a while now.  Please send him get well vibes-I think stress didn't help because he did get better for a few days, but then took a turn for the worse and he's so down and out that he had to leave work early yesterday.  His car is sick too-it's in the shop; let's hope that isn't expensive as we are moving in a few weeks!

Let's recap as always... (and warning, I should probably just change the name of my blog to "Leif's Adventures"):

Wednesday, September 10

Nothing spectacular except:
Bath time: hubs found a nice resemblance of the face Leif was making.  I think it's pretty good!
Friday, September 12

Leif isn't always smiling...this was taken before dinner.  When he's fussy, he's REAL fussy.
Sunday, September 14

So for almost all the weekends in August and September, the weather always skyrocketed.   I think this past weekend was the only weekend where it didn't get above the 80s.  So we've been hermits, not wanting to brave the crazy heat.  This weekend is supposed to go back up and be at around 106!!!  It's the beginning of October for crying out loud!
Leif started getting a fever Saturday night, and Sunday he was definitely sick.  We stayed in and then Sunday evening he threw up all over me.  Twice.  It was gross.  I had to get into the bath with him both times.  Poor little guy.

Monday, September 15

Monday morning Leif's fever broke, but I stayed home with him just to make sure he got all better while hubs went off to jury duty.  He was also ill at this time, but he had to go.  I tried to get work done when Leif took his naps (of course on that day I had all these deadlines for faculty contracts, and it was a frantic day trying to access work files, but I did it!).  Leif was definitely on the mend.

Our little man definitely felt better-instead of wanting to just lay with us, he was up and playing with a smile on his face.
Saturday, September 20

We were invited to my friend's 1-year old birthday party close to my work, which was fairy themed.  Um, we aren't the best at dressing up, so we didn't.  As soon as we parked/arrived, Leif started tearing up and his nose started running...I freaked out and thought he had pink eye, but it wasn't getting all goopy.  Conclusion: something flew/got in his eye and it was trying to flush it out...but he was still in good spirits.

It's amazing at what enthralls him-nothing is in this paper cup.

Digging into the diaper bag.  Can you see his red right eye?  Poor little man!

Having fun despite the crazy eye

My boys!
Sunday, September 21

GO SEAHAWKS!

I think Leif was fascinated by football on TV while playing with his daddy's beard/mouth.  Multitasker!
Tuesday, September 23

While hubs was in class, Leif and I had fun with a paper bag...

Thursday, September 25

So...it's still hard to break Leif of the bad habit that is sleeping in our bed.  But when I went to get ready, Leif repositioned himself so that he was laying next to hubs.  It was a precious moment.
Saturday, September 27

APARTMENT HUNTING DAY!  Hubs was still not feeling all that well, but stress of finding a new place probably enhanced his ill-feelings.  We had to search though; lease is up soon, and I didn't want to take the chance of some of the apartments/houses I had found/made appointments with to disappear.  The first place we checked was a house that I happened to just drive by on my way home one day.  Some great places are not advertised online (unfortunately!), so I wanted to look around and see if there were any signs. This HOUSE was amazing.  Yes, a house in California at a price that we could barely afford!  It was owned by an older man who owned another little house on this large property...and he happened to live in a house on the same property.  Anyway, it wasn't huge, but it was two beds, one bath; washer and dryer were in the kitchen; and it had a covered outdoor area with a sort of picnic table/benches, then a huge storage/workshop area behind that.  And it had a lemon tree, lime tree and orange tree.  It was really nice.  But he had a strict no-pet policy, even though he had a cat wandering around.  So we took an application, didn't say anything, and went on our way.

We drove by a few other places that we just weren't impressed by, then ended up at my work for a pit stop/Starbucks break.  Then back on the road to look at a place that we didn't like at all; it was a four-plex in a huge area with tons of other four-plexes, all privately owned.  The unit we looked at was the largest, on the second floor.  When we stepped outside, it smelled of cooking fish...bad fish (sorry mom, but it really reminded me of my childhood!).  People were sketchy, and the place wasn't really cleaned properly-someone definitely smoked in the place.  We took off quickly after being shown that unit...

We decided to get some food then drove to our last appointment for the day.  I was hesitant because the complex received really low ratings on a bunch of different websites, but it was in our price range and a friend of mine (actually, the photos of the 1-year old birthday party were in the park directly behind the apartment complex!) lives there and loves it-her only complaint is that there's not enough visitor spots.  The apartment we wanted was still occupied and won't be ready until the 23rd-the day before our lease is up!  And it was on hold, but we could be put on the wait list.  So we toured an apartment that was very similar, and it looked great-two beds, two baths with balcony as it was on the second floor.  We can only afford the "classic"; the remodels feature granite countertops and stainless steel appliances, but that was out of our price range.  So we put our names on the wait list; but as soon as we drove away, they called us back saying the guy took back his deposit so we could apply for it.  We were on our way to the house to check it out one more time and to plea with the guy about the no pet policy...

When we arrived, he had an older gentleman with him who happened to live with him and his wife...okay.  He was a man of few words, and asked us how our search went-I think he was probing to see if his price was comparable.  It was definitely a good deal, but when I asked about the pet policy and inquired if he'd consider a bigger deposit, he wouldn't budge.  I told him we had a friendly pup, but still wouldn't budge.  We left discouraged, but then we thought it was probably for the better; he lived within earshot, and the rules he had on his application seemed like if we made a peep he'd be an angry old man.  So we put our deposit on the apartment and within seconds the staff member who showed us around called and said we were approved.  He was such a nice guy!  So folks, we have a new place!  And it's SO much closer to my work!!!  YAY!  No more hour and a half commute for this lady!

Our new home soon!  Well, not in the fountain, but this is just a nice view of part of the complex
This was taken right before viewing our new apartment...he was a champ that day, in and out of the car looking at new places!

When we got home, he had a grand ole time playing in a box!

Sunday, September 28

Race day!  I woke up super early and met my friend/co-worker at his place since it was down the road from the 5K.  We picked up our bibs and waited for a good 45 minutes before the race started.  Oh, and there was a raffle-Michael put his ticket in for a duffel bag, I put mine in for macarons (there were about eight boxes up for raffle; I found one without ticket stubs and put it in).  Finally the race started...holy smokes it had soooo many hills, and a big steep one right from the beginning!  This was the first race where I had to stop and walk a couple times...wah waaaah.  But, I finished with a pretty good time, and for my age group I was smack dab in the middle.  Michael and I both finished in the top 30 of male/female, so we felt pretty good!  AND I won the macarons, woohoo!

Monday, September 29

Leif had his nine month check-up yesterday, so I went into work late.  Sunday night was rough though-he woke up at 4am and his nose was all clogged; I sucked out so much mucus it was gross.  He also threw up on me since he choked on the mucus-it wasn't filled with food, but it was mucusy.  I think that was grosser.  He didn't fall back asleep until 6am-I was so happy I didn't have to go to work, or else I would have been grumpy.  We slept all the way until 8am, and hubs already left for work, so it was frantic trying to get ready and keeping him occupied in the hallway, but I managed to do it!

Getting weighed/head measured.  He only gained half a pound since his last checkup, but he grew 2.5 inches!

Keeping him occupied until the doc came in was a challenge, but I was able to do it!
I dropped him off at daycare and he was the only one-apparently all the other babies were sick!  After work when I picked him up, our daycare lady said he was actually sick, not teething!  He didn't want to be put down, just held all day; he didn't nap, and he didn't want to eat.  Poor guy.  His voice was also an octave lower!  So both my boys were sick yesterday.  Hubs slept on the couch while Leif slept in the crib then in bed with me since he wasn't feeling well...at some point in the night I woke up and Leif had his head on my stomach and was splayed sideways.  Sigh.  I know, I know, we have to break this habit, but we can't really train him until he has his own room!  I discussed the sleep training with our pediatrician; she really understood our predicament as she had to do the same with her first child, and she understood about doing anything to get your baby to sleep since she had to wake up early for work too.  But she said it's going to be harder the older he gets/longer he has the bad habit, so we discussed how to sleep train him.  Oh boy, it's going to be rough.

And here I am today...I was late because I didn't want to wake up Leif, and waited until the last second to wake up hubs to lay in bed with him. And I forgot a million things so I had to run up and grab everything.  All the faculty were here for a meeting-I felt like on the Walk of Shame coming into my office.  Like I said, I really can't wait until I'm closer to work!

8 months 13 days: Running Fool

First, look at these photos of Leif!

Cutie pie.  Kept putting his head on my legs on Sunday.  Of course later on in the evening he pooped  through his onesie onto his high chair seat and all over himself.  It was gross.

Caught him mid-scream.  You'd think he's auditioning for Def Leppard or something.
So I've been running lots more!  Last Friday I tried running during my lunch break; got in about 2.5 miles but I was a super sweaty mess.  I wish the weather would cool down.

Then for the weekend...

Saturday morning's run!

Sunday morning's run!
I know I'm slow, but I really like the fact that I can run without stopping.  I never could do that even when I was smaller and stronger.  So yay me!  I just signed up for a 5K at the end of this month and I signed up for the Tinker Bell 10K in May through a charity, Autism Speaks.  I almost did the 1/2 marathon, but I thought it'd be more productive for me to try and improve my speed at the 10k rather than adding lots more miles.  I feel really good about raising money for the run instead of just paying Disney outright.  Oh yeah, and assuming I'll be in Washington over Christmas break, I signed up for a 5K in Tacoma on Christmas Eve!  Yes, I am a running fool.  It's nice being able to take Miles and/or Leif while running.  Now if I could only get in some strength training, (oh, and eat healthy...whoops), I'd be a happy camper.

Here's my new calendar countdown:

September 27th - Moorpark Mammoth 5K: 19 Days
October 24th - LAST day living @ River Ranch: 45 Days
December 24th - Jingle Bell 5K: 106 Days
December 25th - Christmas!: 107 Days
December 27th - Leif's First Birthday: 109 Days

8 Months 7 Days: Happy Two Years!

Yesterday was our two year anniversary!  Yay!  Two years went by so quickly.  I love you hubby!

So I took another "mini" vacation this weekend-worked a half day last Wednesday and then was off through Monday.  First day of classes is today, and audition sign-ups have been up since Friday...so of course some of the faculty started freaking out how I was going to be gone Friday, even though NO ONE comes in.  The chair wanted me to hire a temp for that one day; I suggested having a Department Assistant come in for that day since they know the music department better than a stranger, and thankfully a DA agreed to come in.  I found out yesterday NO ONE came in.  So all that drama over nothing.  Sigh.

Anyway, I had a wonderful long weekend though!  Here we go, recap in photos of the last couple weeks:

Saturday, August 23

In preparation for the Disney 10K, I've been running during the week at the gym and then around the neighborhood on weekends with Miles.  Before Rochester, I ran 5 miles for the first time, and then when I got back I was able to run a little more than 4 miles (not very fast, but at least I didn't stop!).  Yay!

Sleepy pup in his sun spot-he really enjoys our runs

Miles finally let Leif touch him!

Kisses for Miles
That weekend my friend Christina drove up from San Diego to celebrate her birthday with her family, and she invited us to come out.  Leif wasn't his usual calm self, but he at least smiled for the camera!

After dinner at BJs, we stopped by Rocket Fizz, a fun candy-soda shop.  They had this crazy alien by the door, and Leif was fascinated by it!  I wrote on my Facebook how if aliens visited Earth, Leif would make a great ambassador (very French, with kisses and such...).

Thursday, August 28

So we've been letting Leif roam a little more around the apartment since now he likes to stand at the baby gate in the living room and whine.

He loves the door stopper

One happy baby
Having the day off, we decided to have an adventure and drive down to Long Beach to see the infamous large rubber ducky.  We were a little skeptical as we drove into a very industrial area, but then we saw the large head and knew we were in the right place.
Not very impressed...

After the quick duck visit, we stopped by the Korean Friendship Bell in Long Beach.  No one was around, so this was a great opportunity for Leif to experience grass for the first time!

Happy baby!

We were all starving so we found a Mexican restaurant on the water and had a late lunch.
Leif ate all his pouch food!
Since we had no other plans, we stopped by a few parks on the beach so that hubs could take photos of the "large waves" due to the crazy weather (so....there were no crazy waves unfortunately).  But Leif had fun on a baby swing!
He isn't smiling in this photo, but he was having a great time.
Friday, August 29

I tried spending some quality time with the family since I had to drive down to Anaheim that afternoon to check in for the Disney 10K!  More photos of Leif being very curious about Miles, and Miles actually holding still.

So the Disney 10K sold out within about three hours, but Christina was able to buy a bib.  A week later she said she'd run the 10K through a charity which her work donated money for, so she gave me her bib.  When she picked the bibs up, she was able to just give me one with her name.  Yay!
On the way into the expo

Woohoo!

After the expo we decided to sit by the pool of our hotel and relax.  We had one happy hour drink, then an early dinner.  It felt like we were in Hawaii on vacation!

Saturday, August 30

Race day!  The previous night was the first night being away from Leif, and I thought it could go two ways: either I'd sleep peacefully through the night, or I'd wake up every few hours.  Well, the latter sort of happened: first I couldn't fall asleep right away, and then I tossed and turned all night.  I think I got maybe two hours straight of sleep?  We woke up at 3:15am to get ready and caught the 4am shuttle to Disneyland.  I wish I had more sleep, but I figured the adrenaline would get me through the run.

We arrived at the running area around 4:30am, and sat around waiting since the race didn't start until 5:30am.

Everyone had a letter to hang out in a corral, A-E...I was in letter E.  This is my view of the front, the lineup behind us was just as ridiculously long.  Over 10,000 people signed up for the 10K alone!

Here is my route!

Quickest selfie in front of the castle ever

And I did it!  I ran the whole thing with a quick stop at mile marker 1-they have cute signs up for every mile, and we thought about taking a photo but there was a line!  So we ended up running the entire thing; I went ahead around mile 2.5 and waited for Christina after crossing the finish line.

This is my friend from marching band!  He was in my very first squad.  He lives in Seattle but he flew down with his partner to do the race!

Mile 6 was in Downtown Disney; we ended up snapping a photo before they took down the sign on our way out.

We did it!!  I love the shirts they gave us-they're dry fit!  I sweat soooo much, but you couldn't tell in those awesome shirts.

At the end everyone got medals which I thought was pretty awesome (and deserving...for how much they charge to run, you'd think they would give you admission or discount admission to the parks...but nope.)  Every run has a theme, and this one was "Stitch"-thus the Stitch T-shirts and the medal was of Stitch!

The nice thing about running so early is you have the rest of the day to do anything you want.  It took me about an hour and fifteen to drive home (pretty much a work commute!) and after relaxing at home for a little bit, we decided to try a new burger place to have an early anniversary celebration.  :)
Bricks!  They were pretty good, but for the price, we don't know if we'll go back

Later I received a text photo from Christina of her dog with her ears on...so I decided to do the same. Mwuahahahaha.  He was very good and still for this photo!

Sunday, August 31

Look at this beauty!  It's CLU's baritone saxophone, but I'll be playing it mostly with a quartet set up by our orchestra/wind teacher.  It plays so prettttty.

What better way to celebrate the Puyallup Fair abroad than by making Fair Scones?  Thanks Mom/Nana!  I sure do miss the Puyallup Fair...maybe we'll go to the Los Angeles Fair when it cools down (please cool down!).
The rest of Sunday we went grocery shopping and hung out at home.  It was too hot to do anything!

Monday, September 1

We were super lazy bums...at least I went for a three mile run with Miles and Leif in the morning, but that was about it.

Every time we come home from a run, Miles sprints all around the apartment as if he had been locked up all day.  But then he passes out for the rest of the day.  We caught him in an awkward position...

Monday was Fuss Day for this guy...he threw fits left and right!  And forget rocking him to sleep for naps, he was not having it.  Poor guy, we think he was teething and having some growing pains.

Tuesday, September 2

Back to work, sigh.  Day went by fast though, and was happy to pick up Leif after work.  But it took almost two hours to get home due to accidents and traffic.  I seriously can't wait to move.

He loves standing at the baby gate, but most of the time he just wants to go beyond the gate.

Love this little face.

And for our two year anniversary, hubs bought me flowers which he brought after his first day of his new class.  Such a sweetheart.

So I've got the running bug now and I'm going to start looking for runs that include strollers and/or dogs!  I'm NOT running a marathon no matter what, but I will be doing up to 10Ks now!  :)
